Steve Johnson takes on the sixth seeded Alejandro Tabilo in the first round of the San Diego Open. Johnson is the world number 116 in the latest rankings, having been as high as 84th in January.  He reached the last 16 in Winston Salem just prior to the US Open. That didn't go well for him with a first round defeat to Grigor Dimitrov, who he had beaten at Wimbledon. There had been some other good performances in this American hard court season. Johnson reached the quarter finals in Los Cabos and the last 16 in Atlanta.  On the Challenger Tour, he lost in the final in Sarasota.

Alejandro Tabilo is ranked 70th but was as low as 144th in January of this year. The Canadian has had a lot of success in clay court tournaments this year. He reached a final in Cordoba and a semi-final in Santiago on the ATP Tour and a final on the Challenger Tour. Tabilo also got to the last four in the same tournament that Johnson made the final. His season has gone a bit downhill since a quarter final on clay in Munich five months ago. Since then, he's played seven tournaments and not made it past the last 32 in any of them.
