Stefanos Tsitsipas begins the defence of his Mallorca Championship title on Wednesday with a first-round tie against Yannick Hanfmann. Tsitsipas won the title here last season in what was his debut at the tournament. This was his first ever tour title on grass and he will seek to replicate this success. The Greek number one arrives in Santa Ponsa struggling to get going on grass. He has lost two of the three matches he has played on the surface. His last match saw him eliminated at Halle in the second round. Tsitsipas is a decent performer on grass where he has so far compiled a 21-15 record. The current world number five has been in terrific form in 2023, winning 30 matches and playing in two finals. This will be the second meeting between him and Hanfmaan. His one win against the German came on grass in Wimbledon in 2017.

Hanfmann won the first-ever encounter with Tsitsipas and will hope for the same outcome here. He has looked sharp on grass where so far he has won two of the three matches he has played on the surface. Though not a strong performer on the surface, he will hope his strong start to grass continues here. Hanfmann has also dominated in most of his matchups this season and currently has a 33-16 record. To book this round with Tsitsipas, the German defeated Pedro Cachin in straight sets, losing only three games in the match. The win moved him up one place in the live ranking to number 47, a new career high. Hanfmann is making his debut in Mallorca. The winner of this match will play either Jordan Thompson, Max Purcell, or Feliciano Lopez in the second round.
