Stefanos Tsitsipas will begin his grass court campaign on Thursday with a second-round game against Richard Gasquet at the Stuttgart Open. Top seed Tsitsipas made his debut in Stuttgart last season but only managed to win one match. He will hope the outcome is different this time. The current ATP world number five has won 31 of the 40 matches he has played and has two tour final appearances so far. He arrives in Stuttgart following his quarterfinal finish at Roland Garros. Tsitsipas and Gasquet have played each other twice before and have each claimed one win. Both matches were played back in 2018.

Richard Gasquet defeated Tsitsipas in their only encounter on grass to date. Though he might be past his prime, the Frenchman will be confident of winning again. Gasquet has been on and off the boil so far this season and is currently on a losing record. He has lost 15 of the 29 matches he has played. This form has left him unable to get back into the top 50. Following his first-round straight sets win over the qualifier Christopher Eubanks, he is up to 52nd place in the live ranking. Despite his struggles, Gasquet won his first tour title in two years with his success in Auckland at the start of the year. He is a former finalist in Stuttgart though this was back in 2008 which is also the last time he took part in the competition. A quarterfinal showdown with either fifth seed Tommy Paul or the unseeded Jan-Lennard Struff awaits the winner here.
