Dominic Thiem is a former champion here in Vienna. He won the title in 2019 but since then has only gone as far as the quarterfinals. With the backing of the home crowd, he will hope for another title triumph. Thiem, who has battled with injuries again this season, has compiled a 23-27 record. He has lost more than he has won on every other surface but one. On indoor hard courts, he has lost five of his nine matches. His latest defeat saw him exit in the second round in Antwerp less than a week ago. This inconsistency has seen the former world number three struggle to maintain his place in the ATP top 100. He is currently ranked 108th in the live ranking.
