Tomas Machac has been having an impressive 2024 to date. He looks to continue his good form with a win over Stan Wawrinka in the first round at Indian Wells. For the winner, there's a second round match against the 21st seed Adrian Mannarino. Both Machac and Wawrinka are unseeded for this ATP Masters 1000 outdoor hard court tournament. Machac was ranked 63rd when this tournament got underway, one place below his career high. He's now set a new record as he's 59th in the live rankings. Machac began this year with a run to the last 16 in Brisbane and then beat seeded player Frances Tiafoe before losing in the last 32 of the Australian Open. A quarter final was reached in Marseille and he took Alexander Bublik to three sets in his last tournament in Dubai. He won his only previous match against Wawrinka last year. That was on an indoor hard court with only five games being dropped.

Stan Wawrinka was the runner-up in this tournament seven years ago. He was ranked only 70th in the latest rankings list and is now 38 years old. That's 15 years older than his opponent in this match. The Swiss player has only played three tournaments this year and won just one match. That was on clay against out-of-form Pedro Cachin who has lost all his matches this year. Wawrinka has only played one hard court event in 2024. That was in the Australian Open where he lost to Adrian Mannarino in five sets after winning two of the first three. We don't believe he'll get the chance to avenge that defeat in round two and tip Machac to get the victory.
