World number 58 Roberto Carballes Baena will take on 72nd-ranked Stanislas Wawrinka in the first round of the ATP Gstaad Open on Tuesday. The winner of this match will face Jaume Munar in round two. Wawrinka is a long way from his peak ranking of third in the world, which he managed back in 2015, but the Swiss has done fairly well this season. He has managed to improve his world ranking from 150th at the start of the year to inside the top 75 at present. Wawrinka’s best performances this year have come on the clay, where he currently holds a positive record of 12-10. However, with that said, it is worth pointing out that he has not gotten past the third round of any ATP competition this year. The veteran does not play as frequently as he used to and comes into this tournament with little claycourt preparation, having last played at Wimbledon, where he was beaten by Novak Djokovic in the third round. On his home court, though, he will be confident about his chances of progressing in this one. 

Baena has already earned an ATP title this season, which came back in April when he won the tournament in Marrakech, beating Alexandre Muller in three sets in the final. However, he has struggled to find that sort of form since then, failing to get past the third round in any of the next nine tournaments between then and now. The Spaniard is now 17-13 for the year and 6-6 on the clay. He will be making his first appearance in this tournament since 2013 and made the final here back in 2005. Wawrinka was ranked 361st as recently as last season, which indicates the progress he has made over the last 12 months despite a slight downturn in recent months. He will carry the underdog tag into this match but will be fairly upbeat about his chances against an opponent that isn’t at his best either in recent times.
