Second seed Novak Djokovic and unseeded Stan Wawrinka will renew their long-standing rivalry when they battle on Friday at Wimbledon. Stan Wawrinka has advanced past the second round at the All England Club for the first time in eight years. The last time he played a third-round tie was back in 2015 when he equaled his best-ever result here by making the quarterfinals. This is the only major he has not won and will hope to complete his career Grand Slam this year. Wawrinka defeated 29th seed Tomas Etcheverry in four sets, dropping the second set which was his first of the tournament. This was his 17th win of the season and the second on grass. It allowed him to move up 17 places to 71st in the live ranking. This is the highest he has ranked in two seasons. Wawrinka and Djokovic have battled each other 28 times and it has been a one-sided affair with Wawrinka winning on just six occasions.

Novak Djokovic is targeting to defend his Wimbledon title for the fifth time in a row. That way, he will tie Roger Federer as the players to have won the title here more times, with eight. Djokovic has been dominant so far and is yet to drop a set after two rounds of play. He defeated Jordan Thompson for his 29th win of the season in his last match. The world number two last lost a match on grass in 2018. After defeating Wawrinka 22 times, he will be confident of keeping this unbeaten record going at least past this round. Djokovic and Wawrinka have played each other eight times at Grand Slam tournaments. This is however their first at Wimbledon and on grass. The winner of this third-round tie will play either 14th seed Lorenzo Musetti or 17th seed Hubert Hurkacz next.
