Stan Wawrinka looks to continue his strong second half of the year. The eighth seed in the hard court Astana Open takes on unseeded Marcos Giron in round one. Up next for the winner will be unseeded opposition, either Dominic Thiem or Juan Pablo Virallas. Wawrinka is 47th in the latest ranking list but was down at 88th in July. It's a long way from the third position he held nine years ago. The Swiss player is 38 now and for a change being injury-free. Recently he's got to the last 32 of the US Open and had a win over Cameron Norrie in the Davis Cup. Another notable win on this surface came when he beat then world number ten Frances Tiafoe in Cincinnati. A win over Holger Rune at Indian Wells and a quarter final in Marseille show he can still be a force in 2023.

Marcos Giron is 82nd in the latest rankings list. The American was as high as 49th last year but slipped down the list since then. The last month or so has seen him struggle for form with only one of his last six matches being won. That sole win was over Alexander Bublik (ranked 29th at the time) but he's badly out of form at present. Giron did get to the last 16 in Toronto, beating Holger Rune but he needs to recapture the form shown in America on hard courts earlier in the year when getting to two quarter finals. This could be a close match and we go for Wawrinka to secure the victory.
