Stan Wawrinka vs Lorenzo Sonego Prediction & Betting Tips - ATP Umag Open
by Kennedy Kechula in Tennis Predictions
Sixth seed Stan Wawrinka and second seed Lorenzo Sonego will face off on Saturday in the Croatia Open semifinals. The here winner will play either seventh-seed Matteo Arnaldi or unseeded Alexei Popyrin in the final. Wawrinka is now just two wins away from another triumph in Umag. The Swiss won the title here in 2006, the season before he last participated in the tournament. He will hope his return ends in victory. Wawrinka is in the final years of an illustrious career that has seen him win three Grand Slam titles. He has long been far from his best but he has held his nerves this season to compile a 20-13 win-loss record. His success has largely been part to his form on clay where he has won 10 of the 17 matches he has contested. In Umag he has been excellent, winning all his matches without dropping a set. To book this round, he defeated fourth seed Roberto Carballes Baena by the loss of nine games. The victory moved the former world number three up to 58th in the live ranking, his highest ranking in two seasons.
Lorenzo Sonego is having a topsy-turvy campaign and has won the same number of matches, 19, as he has lost. However, just like Wawrinka, he has performed better on clay. It is only on clay that he has a winning record having won nine of the 15 matches he has played. This form has made his debut in Umag memorable and he will hope to extend his stay past this round. The Italian, having been one of the top seeds, began the tournament in the second round. He has therefore played one match less than Wawrinka which could play to his advantage here. After defeating compatriot Marco Cecchinato in straights in the first round, Sonego prevailed in his toughest match yet in the quarterfinals. He was forced to come from behind to win against Jaume Munar with the match lasting slightly over two hours. As a result of the win, he has moved up to 40th in the live ranking.
