World number six Jannik Sinner will take on 40th-ranked Stanislas Wawrinka in round three of the US Open on Saturday. The winner of this match will move on to face either Daniil Medvedev or Sebastian Baez in the next round. These two have met three times in the past, and Wawrinka leads 2-1. The Swiss comes into this match following a four-set win over Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the last round. That followed a win over Yoshihito Nishioka in round one. He was beaten in round three of the Cincinnati Masters last week. Wawrinka had a very good clay swing which included a final appearance in Umag, but he has only gotten past the third round on the hard court once this year. That came at Indian Wells back in March. He is now 26-16 for the year and 8-4 on this surface. The Swiss has beaten two top-ten opponents this year, which were Holger Rune and Frances Tiafoe last week. But can he claim another big scalp in this one? 

Meanwhile, Janink Sinner made a very good return to the hard court last month. The Italian overcame the likes of Andy Murray and Tommy Paul en route to the Canada Masters final. There he beat Alex De Minaur in straight sets to claim his second hard court title of the year. His first came in Montpellier in February, and he was a beaten finalist on two occasions as well. Sinner’s only disappointment on the hard surface came in Cincinnati, where he suffered a surprise defeat to Dusan Lajovic in the first round. With wins over Yannick Hanfmann and Lorenzo Sonego in this competition, he is now 43-12 and 20-5 on this surface. The Italian is the out-and-out favourite to win this match.
