Sixth seed Stan Wawrinka and the qualifier Filip Misolic will on Tuesday battle meet in the first round at the Croatia Open. A game against Federico Coria or Marc-Andrea Husler in the second round awaits the winner here. Wawrinka last played in Umag in 2007 and will hope his return ends in victory as was in 2006. The veteran Swiss former world number three is in the twilight of his career and has been inconsistent this year. He has won only four more matches than the 13 he has lost. His performances on clay have played a big part in both tallies. The majority of his victories, seven, have come on clay and so too have the bulk of his defeats. He arrives here after losing in the opening round at the Swiss Open. Wawrinka is currently ranked 72nd in the ATP.

Filip Misolic has again had his best moments of the season on clay. The Austrian has managed 28 victories in 2023 with 20 of those coming on clay. He has played two challenger finals on the surface, winning one. Misolic is making his debut in Umag and won both of his qualifiers without dropping a set. In his last match, the 21-year-old defeated Damir Dzumhur by the loss of seven games. He rose from the qualifying rounds to reach the quarterfinals in Bastad last week. A similar run here will be what he works for, if not better. He is currently placed 155th in the live ranking after dropping 26 places due to losing 138 rankings points.
