The New York Mets put their MLB leading 12-5 record on the line when they head to St Louis to take on a Cardinals team also off to a hot start in this NL showdown. New York has been one of the surprise teams of the young MLB season but will come up against a Cardinals team off to another strong start as they hold the league’s fifth best record at 9-5. St Louis would love to start this three game home series off with a win and game one sees the Cards putting Miles Mikolas on the mound against the Mets’ Max Scherzer. Something has to give as both teams have yet to lose a game in which these respective pitchers have started, each going a perfect 3-0 so far.

The Mets splashed the cash in the offseason to bring in the three-time Cy Young award winner Max Scherzer, signing the 37-year-old to a three year, $130 million contract. He’s proven to be a good investment so far as Scherzer has posted a 3-0 record with an ERA of 2.50. His last start saw him pitch seven flawless innings, striking out 10 batters and giving up just one hit in a 3-1 victory for the Mets. Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas has enjoyed a strong start to his season as well, pitching 15 innings and only giving up three total runs. His last outing only saw him make it through three innings after giving up two runs and six hits in a game that the Cards ultimately won 6-2. The Mets rightly come into this game as favorites with Scherzer on the mound but it’s their hot bats that should prove the difference in this game. New York has driven in the third most runs in Major League Baseball with 81 in their 17 games so far.
