Spain face Slovenia on Sunday with the men's Olympic handball bronze medal at stake. Both teams suffered heartbreak on Friday as they lost their individual semi-finals by just a single goal. Spain have done well to make it into this bronze medal match.
They only finished third in their group and as you’ll read later in this preview have had plenty of struggles in this tournament. The Spanish side won the bronze medal at the last Olympics. Three of the last six Olympics that they have played in has seen them win that color medal.
Slovenia will be hoping to win their first ever Olympic medal in men’s handball. Their best previous performance had been reaching the quarter-finals in 2016. They failed to build on that and didn’t qualify for the last Olympics.

Slovenia finished second in Group A with three wins and two defeats. Their return to the Games didn’t begin well with a disappointing loss to Spain after leading by three goals at the break. They bounced back brilliantly with successive wins over Croatia, Sweden and Japan but lost their final group match to Germany.

In the last eight, they defeated Norway by a five-goal margin. Vlad was in top form with 11 goals. That took them into a semi-final against Denmark and they gave the Danes a real battle. Denmark led by five at the break but had to hang on for a one-goal victory.
Spain have lost three matches in this Olympic men’s singles handball tournament. It could have been four because their opening group fixture saw them trailing by three goals to Slovenia at the break. They fought back to win that match by three goals but then lost their next match to Sweden.
The final three games in the group produced wins over Japan and Croatia but a loss to Germany. That was enough to take them into the last eight and a match against Egypt. That also proved to be a tough battle and they went into the break four goals down against Egypt.
Extra time was forced and they eventually won the match by a single goal. A place in the final looked possible on Friday as they led Germany in the second half of their semi-final. They couldn’t hold onto their lead though, losing by a single goal. We tip them to win the bronze.
