Australia were strongly tipped to be one of the top challengers to the USA in this tournament. They have lived up to those claims with four straight wins in this FIBA Women's World Cup. Drawn into Group B they beat Nigeria, Turkey and Argentina with relative ease by an overall margin of 85 points, the widest in the group stages. That took them through to the quarter finals and another convincing win as they defeated China by 41 points just days after the Chinese had only lost to number one seeds USA by just 12 points. They are ahead of their opponents on average points scored, rebounds and assists per game.

Spain had to go through the first knock-out stage after only finishing second in the group. The hosts, who lost to the USA in the 2014 final won two out of three of their group matches but surprisingly lost to Belgium by nine points. That took them through to a clash with Senegal which they won comfortably by 15 points and that was also the margin of victory when defeating Canada in the last eight. Going into the final quarter of that match they trailed the Canadians by three points but put in a stunning final quarter performance winning it 21-3 and progressing to this semi-final. They will have the fans on their side of course but Australia come into this game in better form and can beat them to reach the final.
