Sorana Cirstea will seek her first win of the season when she takes on sixth seed Jelena Ostapenko at the Adelaide International tournament. The two will battle in the first round with the winner going on to next play either Caroline Garcia or Taylah Preston. Sorana Cirstea began 2024 with defeat as she was bundled out with her tournament opener in Brisbane. She will be eager to not allow another early exit but her record here doesn’t read to her favour. Cirstea has lost in the first round both times she has appeared in Adelaide. The second-round loss in Brisbane was her fourth in a row after she finished last season with three successive defeats. Cirstea is currently ranked 26th in the WTA.

Jelena Ostapenko has defeated Cirstea three out of the four times they have met. Two of her wins have come on hard courts though she will be weary as Cirstea won the last time they met. This was last season on grass in Wimbledon. Ostapenko has had a better start to the year compared to her soon-to-be opponent and has won two of her three fixtures. She started things off in Brisbane as well and made it to the quarterfinals. This should have her confident of a better showing here than her debut last season where she never progressed past the first round. The former world number five is up one place to number 11 in the live ranking.
