Stan Wawrinka has returned to the Australian Open for a 19th time and will face off with Lorenzo Sonego in the first round. The winner will then play Andrey Rublev or Joao Fonseca for a place in the third round. Below is our prediction for this match.

Lorenzo Sonego has qualified for at least the second round in Melbourne in each of the last four seasons. He will be confident of maintaining this record against one of tennis’ biggest stars.

The world number 55 has compiled a 2-2 record to start the year. He won his opener in Hong Kong and did the same in Auckland.

Stan Wawrinka has competed in Melbourne since 2006. He won the title in 2014 and has qualified for at least the quarter-finals five times.

In his last two seasons, however, the three-time Grand Slam champion was eliminated in the first round.

This could be the 39-year-old’s last appearance in this major and he will target a strong performance. A winner of 16 tour titles, Wawrinka has seen his form gradually take a tumble.

Last season, he lost 20 of the 32 matches he contested and only managed one win on hardcourts. The former world number three is ranked outside the top 150 ATP places.
