Alexander Zverev represents Germany in this United Cup men's singles match and takes on the Italian Lorenzo Sonego. Zverev is currently ranked seventh in the world, forcing his way back into the top ten after being injured for a long period of time. In Grand Slam tournaments he reached the last four at Roland Garros and the last eight in the US Open. He won two tournaments in the 2023 season with success coming in China and the Netherlands. Zverev has had two previous matches against Sonego and won both of them. The most recent meeting was on a hard court (the surface this match is being played on) in Dubai nine months ago. That was won in straight sets as was their other meeting on clay in 2021.

Italy won the Davis Cup earlier this year but aren't fielding such a strong line-up in this mixed event. His best result this year was getting to the semi-finals in Umag but that was a tournament played on clay.
