Petra Kvitova is in her first semi-final at Roland Garros since 2012. Since making her comeback from a knife attack that took place four years ago, Kvitova has made one Grand Slam final, that being the 2019 Australian Open. The Czech has admitted to having that horrible attack on her mind as she makes her way into the latter stages of this tournament. Kvitova lost to Maria Sharapova in that 2012 semi-final. Her record in Paris hasn't been that great and this is only her second time past the fourth round in this event. She hadn't even made it to the fourth round since 2015, so this a big improvement on recent performances. The seventh seed is yet to lose a set on her way to the last four. However, her draw has been rather kind with no seeded opponents faced.

Sofia Kenin is hoping to win her second Grand Slam of 2020. Her year began with victory in the Australian Open, but she could only make the fourth round at Flushing Meadow losing to Elise Mertens in straight sets. This is only her third time in the French Open, reaching the first and fourth rounds in her previous two efforts. This year has seen a big step forward for the American and she came into this event ranked sixth in the world and seeded fourth for the French Open. As well as her success down under, Kenin has also won a hard court tournament in Lyon. Her warm-up event on clay didn't go well as she lost to Victoria Azarenka without winning a single game. The fact she has come back from that loss to reach the last four at Roland Garros says a lot about her. Kvitova has spoken in the past about the aggression that Kenin shows on court. Kenin has had to go to three sets in all but one of her five matches in Paris. There have been two previous meetings between the pair and both were won by Kvitova. A three-set match looks very likely here.
