Slovenia face Ukraine in the quarter finals of the 2023 Men's European Volleyball Championships. Their possible semi-final opponents include world number one ranked Poland but they need to get past Ukraine first. Slovenia are ranked eighth in the world and that's six places higher than Ukraine. They reached the last four of the 2022 World Volleyball Championships and have an excellent record in this tournament. The last three European Championships have seen them lose in the final. This year has gone well for them too and they won Pool B in impressive fashion. All five of their matches were won with just one set dropped. That just happened to be in their opening match against Ukraine. They lost the first set but then won the next 15 they played in that pool. The last 16 was tougher though and they lost the first two sets against Turkey. They eventually won 15-13 in the final set to reach the last eight.

Ukraine are up to 14th in the world rankngs and are in the last eight of these championships for only the second time. They finished third behind Slovenia in Pool D with two wins and three defeats. After their opening loss to Slovenia, they also lost to Croatia and Bulgaria. Wins over Finland and Spain rescued the situation and they got out of the pool. That took them into a last 16 match against Portugal which they won without dropping a set. Portugal are now 16 places below Slovenia in the world rankings so obviously this is a tougher task. We go for Slovenia to get a second win over Ukraine.
