Kicking off the quarter-finals of the Men’s Olympic Volleyball competition will be Slovenia taking on Poland on Monday morning. The White and Reds finished second in Pool B behind Italy, while the Dragons clinched the top spot in Pool A. Here’s our match prediction for this opening quarter-final encounter.
Poland did excellently to navigate arguably the toughest group in the competition. They got off to a flying start, beating minnows Egypt 3-0 in their opening match, before holding off the tricky Brazilians in game two to claim a narrow 3-2 victory.
However, they struggled to keep up with the formidable Italians in their final match on Friday, going down two sets before claiming the third 26-24. Still, Italy got the job done in the fourth set with a 25-20 scoreline.
With those results, the White and Reds now have a record of seven wins and three losses in their last 10 games in all competitions. They also beat their upcoming opponent 3-1 at the Hubert Wagner Memorial last month.
Meanwhile, Slovenia upset the odds in Pool A to clinch the top spot ahead of the tournament hosts and Serbia. They made a solid start, beating Canada 3-1 in their opening match and following up with a straight-sets win over Serbia in game two.
The final group-stage match was much trickier as Les Bleus refused to throw the towel in despite being 2-0 down. The hosts squared proceedings at 2-2 but the Dragons found that little more when it mattered to claim the win.
Like their next opponent, Slovenia have also won seven of their last 10 games in all competitions and will be looking for revenge after losing to Poland in straight sets last month.
