Group A of the 2024 Olympics Women's Handball competition begins with Denmark taking on Slovenia. This is a Group A match and the other four countries are Germany, Norway, Sweden and South Korea. The top four go into the quarter-finals.
Denmark are the third favorites behind France and Norway to win the Olympic title. The Danes will be looking to regain their glory days having won three successive Olympic gold medals between 1996 and 2004. They've struggled since then and this is the first time they've qualified since 2012.
There have been signs of a return to form though. The 2023 World Championships saw them finish third for the second successive tournament. They lost to Norway in the semi-finals but only after extra time. Denmark then beat Sweden to clinch third spot.
The Danes have lost their last two matches but both were narrow losses (aggregate margin just three goals) to Norway. Before that they had won ther last five matches. Three of their last 11 have been lost but all were to Norway, who they face later in this group.
Slovenia's last match against Denmark was in 2020 and they lost 30-23. They have qualified for these Olympic finals for the very first time. The bookmakers only have two teams below them in the betting to win this tournament, one being South Korea who they will face later.
Slovenia has been improving in recent years and finished 11th in the 2023 World Championships. The year before that, they finished eighth in the European Championships, their best ever performance. Their last two friendlies against Hungary and Brazil have both been lost.
This is a tough Olympics debut and we tip Denmark to win on a -5.5 goals handicap.
