Slovenia take on Australia with the victors taking home an Olympic bronze medal. Neither of the countries have won a medal in the men's Olympic basketball tournament. Slovenia were expecting to be in the final and a chance to win the gold but they lost to France by a single point in the semi-finals. Slovenia put in an impressive performance in the group stages winning all three of their matches with a points difference of +61. They were the top ranked team going into the knockout stages and had a convincing 94-70 win over Germany in the quarter finals. Then came the clash with France and Slovenia had a narrow two point lead after the first two quarters. France stunned them by winning the third quarter by eight points to take the lead. Slovenia fought back but ended a point behind and their dream of a gold medal had gone.

Australia are used to playing in this bronze medal match. The trouble is they keep losing them having finished fourth in three of the last six Olympic Games. They also won their group with victories over Italy, Germany and Nigeria. They only beat Germany by 13 points compared to the 24 point margin when the Germans took on Slovenia. Australia beat Italy by three points in the last eight and then were beaten in their semi-final by the USA by 19 points. Back Slovenia to get the win here and claim the bronze medal.
