Petra Martic is the world number 124 and had to win two qualifying matches to make it into the main draw. That was achieved with few alarms and both matches were won in straight sets. That's taken her to 119th in the live rankings, only four places below her opponent.

The 34-year-old has already reached one WTA Tour quarter-final in 2025. That was in the indoor hard court tournament played in Linz with four matches being won that week. Eight of her 12 matches this year have ended in victory.

Sloane Stephens has won all three of her previous matches against Martic. However, this is their first meeting since 2019. Stephens received a wild card to play in this main draw.

The 31-year-old has only played three tournaments this year and is still waiting for her first victory. This is her first tournament since the Australian Open where she was beaten by Aryna Sabalenka with the other two seeing her beaten in both by Ann Li.
