Sloane Stephens won the Guadalajara tournament last week and looks for more success in Monterrey. The American is the seventh seed and takes on Mayar Sheriff in the first round. The win last week saw her rise to 39th in the world rankings but four years ago, Stephens was the world number three. This year has seen her climbing back up the rankings, having begun it in 65th place. Her win last week ended a four year wait for another WTA Tour title. The American had only played one match in 2022 before last week. That was a three-set loss to Emma Raducanu at the Australian Open. In Guadalajara though, Stephens had five wins, though the highest ranked opponent faced was Maria Bouzkova (then ranked 96th).

Mayar Sheriff is the world number 67, four places lower than at the start of the year and six below her highest ranking. The Egyptian has played five tournaments before this week and is still looking for her first win of 2022. Only one set has been won by her, that was against Heather Watson in the Australian Open first round. Three of her matches have seen her win five or less games, so big improvement is needed this week in Monterrey. Back Stephens to continue her good form and win this match.
