Top seed and world number one Jannik Sinner takes on unseeded Nicolas Jarry in the China Open first round. It’s Sinner’s first tournament since winning the US Open, here’s our match prediction.

Sinner is dominating the rankings at present. He has a near 5000 points lead at the top of the overall rankings. In the Live ATP Race, he’s also top and has already confirmed his place in the Tour Finals.

The Italian has won 55 of his 60 matches this year and that’s seen him win six titles. Of those, all but one has been achieved on hard courts which is the surface for this tournament in Beijing.

The winner of this match takes on either Stan Wawrinka or Jan-Lennard Struff. The 23-year-old has won his last 12 matches. Those victories have seen him win the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open. 

Nicolas Jarry has never lost to Jannik Sinner. There’s been one previous meeting but that was five years ago and played on grass. Jarry is the world number 28 and last week reached the quarter-finals in Chengdu. He only won one match though (against a player ranked outside the top 100) and was beaten by Alibek Kachmazov, ranked 252nd at the time.

He’s really struggling for form at present with just one win in his last nine matches. Not quite the form you want to take into a match against a dominant world number one. We go for over 19.5 games to be played in this match.
