Garbine Muguruza has made a good start to the year as she looks to put a disappointing 2019 behind her. She takes on Simona Halep for a place in the final of the Australian Open. Both players have been world number one at some point in their careers but Muguruza has slipped down the rankings to 32 and lost in the first round of two Grand Slam events last year. The Spaniard has previously shown good form in this tournament reaching the fourth round last year and the last eight in 2017. When she lost the first set of her opening match against Shelby Rogers 6-0, she probably wasn't dreaming of a first semi-final appearance in a Grand Slam tournament since the 2018 French Open. Muguruza has beaten fifth seeded Elina Svitolina, number nine seed Kiki Bertens and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (seeded 30th) to reach the last four.

Fourth seeded Simona Halep showed how good her form is at present in her quarter final win over Annet Kontaveit, dropping jus two games. She is bidding to reach her second Australian Open final after losing to Caroline Wozniacki two years ago. The world number three has only been victorious in two Grand Slam tournaments and won Wimbledon last year. Halep is yet to drop a set in this tournament and looks good value to end the run of Muguruza.
