World number 43 Shelby Rogers takes on Sorana Cirstea in the US Open second round. Rogers beat fellow American Madison Brengle in the first round, losing only four games.  Last year Rogers made it to the last eight at the US Open. That was only one of two times she's got that far in a Grand Slam, the other being at Roland Garros five years ago. 2021 has seen Rogers reach the fourth round in the Australian Open, the first round in Paris and third round at Wimbledon. It's not been a great year for her with only three last eight appearances. Rogers has had one previous match against Cirstea, winning in straight sets but it was five years ago.

 Cirstea is ranked four places higher than her opponent. She's been playing Grand Slam events since 2008 but only reached the last eight of one once. That was in 2008 at the French Open. This year, the third round has been reached in Australia and Wimbledon and the fourth round at Roland Garros. Her best form this year has been on clay, winning a tournament in Istanbul and being runner-up in Strasbourg. Form on other surfaces hasn't been so good though and coming into this tournament, Cirstea had won one of her last five matches. The first round of this US Open saw her beat 29th seeded Veronika Kudermetova in three sets.
