Shelby Rogers faces Olivia Gadecki in a qualifying round of the WTA Austin in what will be only her second game of the 2024 season. In her first, she lost 6-3, 6-2 in straight sets to form US Open Champion Emma Raducanu at the Australian Open. The experienced American has fallen down the rankings of late to 262nd in the world, from a career high of 30th in August 2022, chiefly due to missing six months of action through an injury sustained at Wimbledon. Rogers has yet to win a singles title in her career but has amassed almost $5.5m in prize money and has won 302 matches, losing 253. However, the 31-year-old American has not won a game since the Round of 64 at the Mutua Madrid Open back in April 2023. 

Her opponent is 21-year-old Australian Olivia Gadecki who is ranked 144th in the world in singles, close to her career high of 120th. Although more of a doubles specialist alongside compatriot Kimberly Birrell, Gadecki had a solid start to the year, reaching the Round of 32 at the Brisbane International after coming through qualifying and beating her doubles partner in the Round of 64 before losing to second seed Elena Rybakina 6-4, 6-1. She has lost her last three singles games including an R1 Qualifying defeat to Taylah Preston in the Thailand Open at the end of January. She has amassed 152 wins and 82 defeats in her singles career. She and Rodgers have never met previously on any surface. It will be an intriguing battle of experience against youth and who will come out on top?
