Tenth seeded Jelena Ostapenko faces Shelby Rogers in the second round at Indian Wells. The winner of this match will take on either 18th seeded Leylah Fernandez or Amanda Anisimova in the last 32. It's been a good year so far for Ostapenko who has climbed from 28th to 12th in the rankings this year. In terms of ranking points earned in 2022, Ostapenko is in fifth place. The Latvian has won one tournament this year with success in Dubai. She beat Veronika Kudermetova in the final having previously beaten four Grand Slam winners (Kenin, Halep, Swiatek and Kvitova) to get to the title decider. Her last event saw her lose to Anett Kontaveit in the Doha semi-final. Another big win was recorded earlier that week with victory over Barbora Krejcikova. Ostapenko also made it to the semi-finals in St Petersburg and will be hoping to go deep at Indian Wells after getting to the last four in 2021.

That run to the semi-finals last year included a win over her opponent in this match. Ostapenko beat Rogers in the quarter finals, making it three wins out of three against the American. That was their only meeting on this surface. Rogers began this week ranked 49th but is 76th as far as ranking points earned in 2022 go. The American didn't play again after last October's Indian Wells tournament until January of this year. Rogers got to the last eight in Adelaide and beat Maria Sakkari that week. Three tournaments have been played before getting to Indian Wells and all ended with first round losses and only one set won. This tournament has seen her beat Nuria Parrizaz Dias but she needed to win a third set tie-break to get the win. Ostapenko is in far better form at present and can get the win.
