It was the US Open title that was the first Grand Slam win for Serena Williams. That was way back in 1999 when incredibly her opponent in this final was a month away from her second birthday. This is Serena's second straight Grand Slam final and she'll be hoping to go one better than at Wimbledon where she lost to Angelique Kerber. A win here will be her 40th Grand Slam title and her 24th singles win equalling the record of Margaret Court (though 11 of her titles were in her home Australian Open that often had weakened fields). Williams has only dropped one set in this tournament which again sees top ten seeded players absent from the closing stages. The last two rounds in particular have seen her getting better and better and although only seeded two places higher than her opponent and still not back to her absolute best, she is the deserved favourite to win this title.

Naomi Osaki had never got past the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament before this event. 2018 has been a good year for her beginning with that fourth round appearance at the Australian Open. She went on to win at Indian Wells including a win over world number one Simona Halep and she beat Serena Williams in Miami. This is only her third appearance in the US Open main draw and has only dropped one set to date in this tournament. The semi-final saw her beat Madison Keys in straight sets and this really has been a dream fortnight for her. Her win over Serena was in straight sets with Williams only winning five games but that was in March and Serena has come a long way in her comeback since then. Go for Williams to make history by winning this final.
