Serbia are one of the favorites to challenge the USA for gold. The two-time silver medalists are back at the Summer Games to end an eight-year hiatus. They last competed at the Olympics in Rio where they lost in the championship match to the USA.
Svetislav Pesic’s men prepared for their Paris campaign with five build-up matches. They won three with two of those being against France and Greece, two teams expected to make podium finishes. One of their losses however was against the USA. The Eastern Europeans were defeated 105-79 just 10 days ago.
The USA are the favourites to remain as the last team standing in Paris. Steve Kerr, head coach of the Golden State Warriors, has assembled a star-studded line-up not only of players but also coaches. Team USA have never failed to finish on the podium at the Olympics.
They made their debut in 1936 and have won a record 16 gold medals with four coming in their last four appearances. This is the most they have won in a row since winning seven gold medals between 1936 and 1968.
They’ve beaten Serbia in three of their last four meetings, two being at the Rio Olympics. The USA, however, lost the last time the two nations met in a competitive game at the 2019 World Cup. Kerr’s men prepared for Paris by winning all their five friendly fixtures, against teams that have qualified for the Olympics.
