Serbia vs Australia Prediction & Betting Tips - Men's Olympic Tournament
by Kennedy Kechula | in Men's Olympic Tournament Predictions
Struggling Australia will face off with Serbia in the quarter-finals of this year’s Olympics Men’s Basketball Tournament. Ahead of this match on Tuesday, we take a look at the two nations’ records before offering our predictions.
Both these teams finished second in their respective groups; Australia claimed second spot in Group A with one win while Serbia were the runners-up in Group C after claiming two wins. The winner of this tie will set up a clash against the winner of the Brazil vs USA match for a place in the gold medal decider.
Securing a semi-final spot will guarantee a chance to battle for, at the very least, a bronze medal. Serbia have won twice against Australia in three matchups and are the bookies’ favourites to win this coming encounter. This will mark the third successive matchup between these two nations at the Olympic stage.

Serbia - Australia: Form Analysis
After a tough start to the competition, Serbia have regrouped and seem ready for another podium finish at the Olympic Games. Svetislav Pesic’s men were overwhelmed by the USA on matchday one and lost 110-84.
The loss ended a run of two successive wins. This, however, didn’t hamper them going forward and in their next game as they dominated Puerto Rico in a 41-point win. Serbia, who are averaging 95.7 points per game, defeated South Sudan 96-85 in their final group match.
The two-time Olympic silver winners have returned to the Olympics after missing the last edition. In the 2016 Games in Rio, they faced off twice with Australia and won in the semi-finals to secure silver. That was the last time the two nations met.
After winning silver twice at Olympic Games, Serbia are targeting gold at Paris 2024.
As Serbia look to have turned the corner, their opponents Australia have regressed. The Oceania representatives lost their last two matches, dampening their strong start to the competition. Brian Goorjian’s men were defeated 77-71 in their final group game by Greece.
They finished above Greece, who secured the final best third-placed team slot in the group by a -4 point difference. The Boomers have made the semi-finals in the last two editions of the Olympics. They secured bronze in Tokyo.
To ensure another podium finish, they will have to get back to the form that saw them lose just once this year before their current slump. Australia, who defeated Serbia in the 2016 group stages, began their campaign in Paris with a 92-80 win over Spain.

Serbia & Australia Squad Analysis
Only the USA have averaged more points per game in Paris than Serbia. The two nations are the only ones to average at least 90 points per game. Serbia’s offensive fluidity has been led by the duo of Bogdan Bogdanovic and Nikola Jokic.
Bogdanovic is putting up 19 points a game while Jokic is adding 18.7 points. Jokic is shooting 64.5% from the field and is grabbing a tournament-high 11 rebounds a game. Vasilije Micic is another Serbia player to watch here. The OKC Thunder guard is averaging 13 points and 5.3 assists in the tournament.
The Serbian players will hope to pin down Australia with their high level of offensive fluidity.
Australia have five players averaging in double figures at the Olympics. While the offence has performed, it's Australia's defence which has ultimately let them down. Australia are averaging 16.7 turnovers a game which is the second poorest tally. They also sit second from the bottom in blocks.
Jock Landale is shooting 67.6% from the field and putting up a team-leading 17.7 points. Josh Giddey and veteran Patty Mills are adding 15 and 13.3 points respectively.

Our Serbia vs Australia Prediction
Our prediction for Serbia v Australia is for over 170.0 points to be scored in the match. Australia did not have an inspiring group stage campaign but they did showcase their offensive strengths. They have averaged over 80 points.
Serbia performed a bit better than Australia in qualifying for the knockouts and key to their success was their fluid offence. They are one of only two teams averaging over 90 points. With the winner getting closer to a podium finish, we expect a high-scoring fixture.
