Tenth seed Frances Tiafoe and unseeded Sebastian Ofner will face off in the second round on Thursday at the US Open. Sebastian Ofner is making his main draw debut at Flushing Meadows. He marked this feat by defeating Nuno Borges in four sets in the first round. The win ended a four-match losing run for the Austrian and moved him up one place to 57th in the live ranking. Despite his recent struggles, Ofner has been dominant this year. He has compiled a 50-22 record though the majority of his matches have been on clay. On hard court he has had 14 appearances, winning eight times. One of his six finals this year in the challenger circuit was on hard court.

Tiafoe took slightly over two hours to get the better of wildcard Learner Tien in the first round. He won in straight sets and dropped eight games in the process. The American has been in good form on hard court where he has an 18-7 record. This is reflective of his overall form this season. Tiafoe has won 34 of the 48 total matches he has played in 2023 which has resulted in two titles. None however has been on hard court. His form this year allowed him to move into the ATP top 10 for the first time. He is however down to 13th in the live ranking after struggling in past weeks. Tiafoe has qualified for the second week of competition in this major for the last three seasons. Last season he recorded his best-ever finish by reaching the semifinals. A third-round meeting with either 22nd seed Adrian Mannarino or unseeded Fabian Marozsan awaits the winner here.
