Unseeded pair Alex de Minaur and Sebastian Korda meet in the Paris Masters first round. The winner of this match takes on fourth seeded Daniil Medvedev in round two  Sebastian Korda began this tournament ranked 33rd which is only three places below his career high. He's in good form having reached the final of his last two tournaments in Gijon and Antwerp. He's risen 24 places since July and the 22-year-old looks likely to be seeded at the Australian Open in early 2023.

Alex de Minaur is not in such good form as his opponent. The Australian is ranked 25th but was as high as 17th last year. His best recent performance was reaching the semi-final in Stockholm earlier this month. That was followed by a last 32 defeat by eventual finalist Holger Rune in Basel last week. That made it five of his last seven tournaments in which de Minaur has failed to get past the last 32. When he does hit form, he can do well, as was seen when he won the title in Atlanta in August.
