Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is up against Sebastian Korda in the Monte Carlo Masters first round. Both players are unseeded and the winner faces a tough task in round two of this outdoor clay court tournament. That's because their scheduled opponent is the second seed Jannik Sinner. A close match is likely here as only two places separate these players in the live rankings. Fokina is 29th, a couple of positions behind Korda. In the Live ATP Race, Fokina is 14 places lower than Korda. So far this year, Fokina has reached a couple of hard court quarterfinals. He did enter the Estoril clay court tournament last week but withdrew before it began. The Spaniard lost in the first round of this Masters 1000 tournament last year but in 2021 got to the last eight and in 2022 was the runner-up.

Korda leads his opponent 1-0 in previous meetings. That match was played in 2022 with only two games being dropped but it was in an outdoor hard court tournament. The American is playing in Monte Carlo for only the second time. His other appearance was two years ago when making it to the third round. He's won one ATP Tour clay court event, the 2021 Emilia Romagna Open. He only played four clay court matches last year and lost three of them. This year has seen him get to one semifinal in Adelaide and the last eight in Dubai, both hard court tournaments. This could be close but we tip Davidovich-Fokina to progress to round two.
