Fifth seed Sebastian Baez will battle world number 106 Federico Coria in the Argentina Open quarterfinals. The winner of this third-ever meeting between these two will play either Dusan Lajovic or Facundo Diaz Acosta in the semis. Sebastian Baez is through to the last eight for the first time in this event. This is his third main draw appearance. The Argentine, who is yet to drop a set in two matches in Buenos Aires, defeated Luciano Darderi in the last round. This was his seventh win in 11 outings this season and the fifth on clay. Baez arrived for this tournament after his semifinal exit in Cordoba, a tournament he had won last year. The disappointment of not having defended his crown should be extra motivation to go all the way here. Baez defeated Coria in the aforementioned final in what was their first-ever encounter. He is up one place to 29th in the live ranking.

Federico Coria avenged that Cordoba finals loss by defeating Baez also on clay in the first round in Bastad. Having had a strong start to the year, he will be confident of taking the lead in this series and progressing. Coria has compiled a 9-4 record thus far and all nine of his wins have come on clay. The Argentine has alternated between the tour and challenger circuits though and has recorded a runner-up finish in the latter. Coria defeated Cameron Norrie, last year’s runner-up, in three sets in the last round. In both his matches in Buenos Aires, the 31-year-old has been forced to win a decider to progress. Coria has never gone past the quarterfinals in this ATP 250 event and was defeated in this very round two seasons ago. He has moved right back into the ATP top 100 after making an 11-place jump in the live ranking to number 95.
