The New York Yankees will look to keep their hot bats going when they travel out west to take on the Seattle Mariners. The Yankees have found a groove after an indifferent start to the 2023 regular season. They’re now up to third-place in the highly-competitive AL East with a record of 32 wins and 23 losses. New York is coming off a 10-4 win over the Mariners in the first of this three game series. It’s the second game in a row that the Bronx Bombers have scored 10 runs after their 10-7 win over the Padres on Sunday. Standing in their way is a Seattle Mariners team that has overall been in a strong run of form. Seattle has won seven of their last 10 and has moved to above .500 with a record of 28-26. This has them sitting fourth in the AL West, 6.5 games behind the division leading Texas Rangers.
Taking the mound for the New York Yankees is Nestor Cortes who has experienced an up-and-down start to the 2023 season. Cortes has a 4-2 record on the year but is posting a 5.30 ERA through 10 starts. The lefty is coming off a six inning, five hit, four earned run performance in his last start against the Orioles which also saw him give up two home runs. It was the third time in the last five starts that Cortes had given up at least four earned runs. On the other side will be Logan Gilbert getting the start for the Mariners. Gilbert has shown more consistency than his counterpart so far this year, posting a 3-2 record with an ERA of 3.60 through 10 starts. The big righty is coming off a strong showing in his last start, going eight innings while only allowing three hits and two earned runs. This was the fourth start in the last five that Gilbert has allowed two earned runs.

The fact that the Mariners have been able to hold their opponents to low run totals in the majority of their previous eight games is a testament to how well the bullpen is playing. If Gilbert can contain these hot Yankees’ bats until the later stages of the game, the Mariners should be able to close it out when it comes time to bring in the relief pitchers. The home team is fairly significant favorites for a reason here and we’re going along with the bookmakers on this one.
