The Seattle Mariners will take on the Cleveland Guardians in an all-American League clash in Spring training on Sunday. The Mariners missed out on a playoff spot by one game in 2023, a year on from making the playoffs for the first time since 2001. They were unfortunate to be in the same division as the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros, the two ALCS teams. Mitch Garver is their big winter signing, coming over from the Rangers. Teoscar Hernandez and Eugenio Suarez have both departed, leaving a big hole in power to be filled. A healthy Mitch Haniger would help in that regard and in Julio Rodriguez, they have one of the most exciting young talents in the game. George Kirby and Louis Castillo will lead a solid rotation that will be the same as in 2023.

The Guardians have won this division in four of the last eight years, but they were poor last year suffering their first sub 80-win season since 2012. Stephen Vogt takes over as manager after a year as a coach in Seattle in 2023 which will add some interest to this game. Jose Ramirez will be looking for more players on base ahead of him this season, unable to carry the team on his own but he has been incredibly loyal to the team, producing some serious numbers. A healthy starting rotation will be a big plus with Shane Bieber missing a third of 2023 and Triston McKenzie missing almost the entire year. If staying fit, then the Guardians will have a chance.
