An East vs West matchup in the NHL sees the New York Islanders traveling cross-country to the Climate Pledge Arena to take on the Seattle Kraken on New Year’s day. This matchup sees two teams in very different veins of form as the Islanders will be looking to extend their winning streak to four games while the Kraken will be looking to put an end to a three game losing skid. New York is coming off a gritty 2-1 win over Columbus in their last outing on Thursday to cap off their three game homestand with a perfect 3-0 record. The Isles have moved up to fifth in the Metropolitan division with a record of 21 wins, 14 losses and two overtime defeats putting them on 44 points and 10 points behind leaders Carolina. Despite their recent winning run, New York has struggled as the visiting team in recent weeks. The Isles have only won one of their last five road games with two of those defeats earning a point by going to overtime.
They’ll face off against a Kraken side looking to bounce back after a heavy 7-2 home defeat to Edmonton on Friday. Seattle has now lost three in a row and two straight on their home ice with the defense particularly looking concerning as of late. The Kraken are still in a decent position league wise as they sit fifth in the Pacific division with a record of 18 wins 12 losses and four overtime losses putting them on 40 points. They now trail the top seeded Golden Knights by 12 points and are looking at a record of 3-6-1 in their last 10 games overall. Seattle’s seven goals allowed in their previous game was the second highest they have conceded so far this season after their thrilling 9-8 win against the Kings earlier in the campaign. The most recent result means that the Kraken have now given up 15 goals over their current three game losing streak.
