There is only one possible result that will put a smile on the face of the Scottish team. They have to beat Russia and earn a bonus point for scoring four tries or more. The Scots go into this penultimate group match sitting in third place in Pool A. Ahead of them are Japan and Ireland with a six point gap to Ireland and nine to hosts Japan, who Scotland face in their final match. Ireland should clinch qualification with a win over Samoa on Friday so it looks like being between Japan and Scotland for the final place.
A win for Scotland over Russia will take them to within five points of Japan but they need that bonus point to reduce the deficit to four. Getting a bonus point against Russia is vital, just in case they beat Japan but only narrowly giving their opponents a bonus point. Scotland lost to Ireland in their opening game but since then have defeated Samoa 34-0. They take on a Russian side who are in only their second finals and have lost all seven games played. Three have been lost in Japan with 99 points conceded. They have never faced Scotland before but their first meeting can be a losing one. Go for Scotland to win on a -35 handicap.
