Sara Sorribes Tormo continues her unlikely run in the Tennis in the hard court Land tournament in Cleveland. The Spaniard takes on third seeded Veronika Kudermetova in round two despite having already lost once this week. Tormo was beaten by Clara Burel in the final qualifying round but was reinstated as a lucky loser. That gave her a first round match against Katerina Siniakova and that saw her opponent retire in the second set when 2-6 0-4 down. The 26-year-old was ranked 95th at the start of this tournament and is four places higher in the live rankings.  Tormo is much happier on clay and rarely plays on hard courts. This year has seen just four games played and she's 2-2.

Third seeded Veronika Kudermetova is ranked 16th in the world but didn't play well in Cincinnati last week. A loss in her first match to Venus Williams led to her seeking a wild card to play in this Cleveland tournament. Her first round win over qualifier Nadia Podoroska didn't start well. Kudermetova lost the first set but then won the next two for the loss of only four games. This is only her second tournament since Wimbledon so the more matches the better for her as she prepares for the US Open. One previous match against Tormo was lost but that hard court match was played three years ago. Kudermetova can win this and set up a quarter final against either ninth seed Sloane Stephens or unseeded Mirra Andreeva.
