Clara Burel will seek her first win against Sara Sorribes Tormo when the two square off on Friday at the Palermo Ladies Open. Both players are unseeded coming into this match. The winner of this quarterfinal tie will next play either one-seed Daria Kastakina or fifth-seed Jasmine Paolini. Sara Sorribes Tormo defeated qualifier Nuria Brancaccio in straight sets in the last round. This was her first straight sets win of the tournament and 14th victory on clay in 2023. The Spaniard has been at her best on clay. To put it into context, only one of her victories hasn’t been on the surface. This should have her confident of progressing past this round and possibly challenging for the title. Tormo has won both encounters with Burel with the latest coming earlier this year at the French Open. Despite advancing to this round, Tormo has dropped 12 places to 97th in the live ranking after losing 50 ranking points.

Clara Burel started the tournament ranked nine places below Tormo, she is now up 11 slots to 83rd in the live ranking. The Frenchwoman has been in fine form in Palermo and will hope this finally sees her claim her first win against Tormo. She has won both her opening two rounds here without dropping a set. In her last match, she defeated unseeded Cristina Bucsa by the loss of six games. This took her record for the season to 21-11 with 13 of her wins coming on clay. Her form on clay has allowed her to win her first title of the season which came in Montpellier in the ITF. Burel is playing in Palermo for the second time and has set a new personal record already here by advancing this far.
