A spot in the World Series is on the line when the Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres battle it out in game one of the NLCS at Petco Park. Two Wild Card teams and the last two NL teams to qualify for the playoffs, the Phillies and Padres will be thrilled to have gotten to this stage as they each had to overcome stronger teams in the divisional series. The Phillies made it past the defending champion Atlanta Braves 3-1 while the Padres beat arguably baseball’s best team in the LA Dodgers 3-1. This is Philadelphia’s first time in the playoffs since 2011 and first appearance in the NLCS since 2010. On the other side, you’d have to go all the way back to 1998 for the last time that San Diego made it to this stage.

This should be a fascinating matchup against two underdog teams both coming off sizable upsets in the previous round. Philadelphia finished the year with an 87-75 record, sneaking into the last Wild Card spot with the worst record of all the participating NL teams. The Phillies were just below .500 on the road this season with a 40-41 away record. The Padres finished the regular season with an 89-73 record and qualified for the second to last Wild Card spot. San Diego didn’t have much of a notable home field advantage this year, going only 44-37 in front of the home fans.

Zach Wheeler gets the start for the Phillies with the 32-year-old looking to carry over his stong regular season form which saw him finish 12-7 on the year with a 2.82 ERA. Wheeler pitched two games against the Braves so far this postseason, pitching a six inning shutout in his first start and giving up three runs in his second. On the other side, Yu Darvish gets the not for the Padres. The 36-year-old was 16-8 on the season with a 3.10 ERA. Darvish’s first start of the postseason came in an impressive seven inning, one earned run performance against the Mets while his second saw the Padres still beat the Dodgers despite allowing three home runs.

We’re going to back the Phillies to be winning after the first five innings as our bet for this one. The Padres have the deeper bullpen so it’s best to eliminate them from the equation by just focusing on the starters with this first five line. Darvish giving up three home runs in his last outing is concerning, especially against a Philly lineup that has a lot of power and has hit righties well all season. Wheeler has been excellent in his last five outings overall and should have the edge in this matchup.
