Unseeded players Roman Safiullin and Matteo Arnaldi will battle each other in the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International tournament. A semifinal showdown with either Holger Rune or James Duckworth will then await the victor. Roman Safiullin is making his debut in Brisbane and so far so good for the Russian. He shocked third seed Ben Shelton in the first round and then got the better of crowd favourite Alexei Popyrin last time out. Both matches did require him to win a decider though. Having had an excellent 2023 season, Safiullin will fancy his chances of going all the way here. His 41 wins last year allowed him to finish with a career-high ranking of world number 39. He also earned his maiden tour final and claimed the biggest win of his career when he defeated Carlos Alcaraz in Paris.

Matteo Arnaldi also had a strong showing in 2023 and has kept that momentum to have a winning start to this season. For the third season in a row, he claimed at least 50 wins and ended the year with a 51-26 record. He alternated between the top two levels of the ATP and won two challenger titles. The majority of his victories (21) came on hard courts. It was the first time since turning pro that he has won at least 20 matches on the surface. The Italian, who is also making his debut in Brisbane, defeated the qualifier Lukas Klein in three sets to book this round. He also needed a decider to win his first-rounder against Marton Fucsovics. Arnaldi is currently ranked 44th in the ATP.
