World number 39 Roman Safiullin bids to make it into round two of the Miami Open. To do so he has to get past qualifier Diego Schwartzman who continues to struggle in the rankings. The winner of this match will be up against the 23rd seeded Lorenzo Musetti. Safiullin is in the main draw of this outdoor hard court Masters event for only the second time. Last year he lost in round one to Gregoire Barrere. This year has seen him reach one outdoor hard court semi-final. That was in Brisbane two months ago and included a good win over Ben Shelton. He's been rather inconsistent since then and lost a two-set lead when being beaten by Tallon Griekspoor in the first round of the Australian Open. His last tournament was Indian Wells and he beat Daniel Evans before losing to seeded player Sebastian Korda.

Diego Schwartzman was as high as eighth in the world in 2020 but began this tournament down in 122nd position, The Argentinian had to qualify to get into this main draw and struggled to do so. In the final qualifying round he had to come from a set down to get past Arthur Rinderkneck, winning the final set on a tie-break. Before this tournament he had lost seven matches in a row, not even winning on the clay courts of South America. His first qualifying round win over Zachary Svajda was his first victory since his first match of the year in January. He's yet to win a main draw match on the ATP Tour this year.
