Fourth seed Daniel Evans take on unseeded Roman Safiullin in the second round of the Chengdu Open. The winner could face sixth seed Max Purcell in the last eight of this outdoor hard court tournament. Evans comes into this match after his Davis Cup heroics last week. His singles wins included beating world number 12 Alex de Minaur. He also was one half of the doubles pairing that won the vital match against France to reach the finals. Evans is 27th in the rankings which is six places below the career high he achieved last month. The British player is known for his inconsistency but did win a hard court title in Washington last montn and reach the US Open third round.

Roman Safiullin reached the quarter finals at Wimbledon this year but didn't do so well in the hard court Grand Slam events. He lost in his first match in Australia and lost in the second round of the US Open. The Russian began this tournament ranked 55th in the world. That's 12 places below the career high he reached in July of this year. Safiullin is playing his first tournament since his five-set loss to Tommy Paul in New York. Only one of his last five matches had been won before he arrived in Chengdu. The first round of this tournament saw him get a straight sets win over Brandon Nakashima. That was only the third match he's won in the main draw of an ATP hard court tournament this year. Evans can get the win here.
