World number two Carlos Alcaraz makes his tour return and will on Tuesday battle the qualifier Roman Safiullin at the Paris Masters. The two will play each other in the second round with the winner advancing to play either Karen Khachanov or Laslo Djere. Roman Safiullin is having an excellent debut in Paris and has won his last three matches. The Russian has lost only one set in this run. He defeated Frenchman Alexandre Muller in straight sets in the first round. The win was the 40th of an exciting season for the 26-year-old. It allowed him to move into the ATP top 40 for the first time. Safiullin, who has won one challenger title this far, has won 10 of 14 matches on indoor hard courts.

Carlos Alcaraz was last on the court three weeks ago as he disappointingly exited the Shanghai Masters in the third round. The Spaniard, who has won six titles this year, has failed to reach the final in any of his last three tournaments. It is of high importance that he doesn’t make it four successive tournaments if he is to reclaim the number one position. Alcaraz and world number one Novak Djokovic are both in contention for the ATP number one Singles ranking. To stand a chance of toppling Djokovic, Alcaraz must at least reach the final. The 20-year-old has dominated the tour once again and has won the second-most number of matches with 63. Alcaraz, who made the quarterfinals here last year, is making his indoor hard court debut this season.
