Fourth seed Daniil Medvedev will begin his Miami Open tournament with a second-round battle with the unseeded Roberto Baena on Sunday. Baena lost in three sets the last time he played Medvedev in the second round in Melbourne two years ago and his underwhelming start to the season suggests that he is set for another hiding here. The Spaniard has a losing record to start the season with eight losses from his 12 matches. This has resulted in him dropping out of the world’s top 80 and is currently ranked as number 81 in the live ranking. Baena’s last two wins have come as a result of his opponents retiring and though he was ahead in both matches, it leaves plenty for speculation. He has never progressed past this round in four previous appearances.

Daniil Medvedev is the best-performing player on the ATP tour circuit as he has made the final in his last four tournaments and has won three titles. He suffered only his third loss of the season in the final at Indian Wells and looked to be struggling with fatigue the entire tournament. The world number five has now had a week to refresh and will target another finals appearance for the season at a tournament he has never progressed past the quarterfinals. The match will be played on an outdoor hard court where the winner will advance to play either the unseeded Alex Molcan or 28th seed Yoshihito Nishioka in the third round.
