Roberto Carballes Baena and Christopher O’Connell, both unseeded, will face off in the first round at Indian Wells. The winner of their second career meeting will play Matteo Berrettini for a place in the third round. Below is our prediction for this match. 

Roberto Carballes Baena has arrived in Palm Springs for his fifth appearance in torrid form. The Spaniard, who is having an uninspiring season, has lost his last four fixtures. 

Yet to win a single set in his last three outings, Carballes Baena was eliminated in the first round in Acapulco last time out. He has now lost seven of his last 12 matches and is placed 50th in the live ranking. 

The 31-year-old, who is back at Indian Wells after a season away, defeated O’Connell via retirement in Rome last season. 

Christopher O’Connell won his opening round tie here last season on his debut. He, however, did not make it past the second round and will be eager to avoid another early exit. 

The Australian is having a better season than Carballes Baena. He has won seven of 12 matches and registered six of those victories in his last eight fixtures. The 30-year-old is coming off a run to the second round in Dubai as a qualifier.
