Taro Daniel faces Roberto Bautista Agut in round one of the Mallorca Open. For the winner, there’s a tough match in round two against the second seed Ugo Humbert. Both players are unseeded in this final grass court tournament before Wimbledon. Daniel is 83rd in the live rankings after making it through qualifying into round one of the Cinch Championships. He only had to beat Arthur Cazaux to qualify as his scheduled second opponent Thanasi Kokkinakis withdrew with an injury. Daniel then faced the fourth seed Taylor Fritz in round one and lost in straight sets, losing each set 6-3. Daniel hasn’t made it past the last 16 of a tournament since reaching the final of a hard court tournament played in Auckland five months ago.

Roberto Bautista Agut reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon six years ago. He’s down at 122nd in the live rankings after losing in the second qualifying round of the Halle Open in the past week. That did his ranking no good at all as he’d reached the semi-final of that tournament in 2023. Before that, he’d made it to the last 16 of the Libema Open but his one win came against a player ranked outside the top 200. Agut made it all the way to the final of this tournament two years ago but isn’t in that kind of form at present. He leads Daniel 2-0 in previous meetings and one was on grass and in this tournament two years ago. We tip him to get another win over the Japanese player, but tougher tasks lie ahead.
